November is National Adopt a Senior Pet Month, a month dedicated to helping older pets find their fur-ever homes. At Rosewood, we have a particular soft spot for those animals in their senior years; and think there are plenty of paw-some reasons to welcome a grown up furry friend into your home...
They are already house trained
Mature pets don’t require the constant monitoring and training that younger furries need. A big advantage is that many senior cats and dogs are already house-trained, saving you weeks and even months of stress! It’s also easier to teach older pets new tricks as they tend to be calmer and less energetic than younger ones.
Great for first time pet owners
Adult dogs tend to have more manageable energy levels than high energy puppies, which can be quite tiring and demanding for a new pet owner. In fact, older pets are ideal for all ages; they make loving companions for elderly or less active people and can be great for children as they tend to have a softer temperament and are less boisterous than younger animals.
They don’t need as much exercise
Senior pets don’t need as much exercise - little and often is the key. You may need to take more rest breaks when you’re walking an older dog but it is still important to keep them active to help their muscles and joints.
If you are thinking of welcoming a senior pet into your home, we’ve shared some of must-have products to help keep them happy, healthy and active:
Our new Adjustable Pet Three Steps (also available with 4 steps) will help older pets climb onto furniture, and the steps are carpet lined to prevent slippage.
Regular supplements can help joint mobility and we’ve recently added Vet’s Best products to our expanding portfolio. The Advanced Hip and Joint Tablets helps support dogs’ normal, healthy cartilage, connective tissue and joints.
Keep your new pet’s mind sharp with an interactive toy such as the Nina Ottosson collection - check out the Dog Tornado puzzle if you’re looking for ways to make feeding fun!
And finally, make sure your new member of the family has a cosy place to sleep. Our Red Orthopaedic pet bed provides additional support for bones and joints and promotes restful sleep. The bed provides comfort, support and relieves pressure points.
